There is something so nostalgic about autumn. It is my favorite season, and there are so many fun things to do that only come this time of year. If you are like me, I enjoy keeping a list of ideas and finding new ideas of activities to do during autumn. It doesn’t usually take much to entertain my two year old, and it really can be so simple to find activities that can entertain a kid for hours and make fall memories together!
1. Visit A Pumpkin Patch
While this can be such a fun family activity, not everyone has close access to a pumpkin patch. Even if it means visiting your local store or farm stand to pick one of those pumpkins already lined up outside, your Little One I’m pretty sure will be just as excited about the fact that they picked out their own!
2. Collect Colorful Leaves
Living in the country, one of the activities we enjoy doing is taking a small basket and going on a little nature walk around our property. This can be as simple as making observations and learning about what we find, or playing a bit of a scavenger hunt and searching for certain color leaves or kinds. The young ages are so fun because every item is such a source of excitement as they always feel they found a treasure!
3. Go Apple Picking
We absolutely look forward to going to our local apple orchard every year, and multiple times I might add during the season! Some orchards offer a variety of activities as well and while my son enjoys running up and down the apple tree lanes, he also looks forward to feeding the animals they have there, getting an apple cider donut from the shop, and “riding” the tractor they have as well.
4. Paint A Pumpkin
While carving a pumpkin is a fun typical fall activity – it isn’t always super toddler friendly! My toddler had a blast painting his own pumpkin and it can also be washed off to be carved later! Simply lay down some floor protection, get out some washable non-toxic acrylic paint and a brush and let your little one have fun!
5. Take A Scenic Fall Walk
We are blessed to live on a country road with lots of trees that create a beautiful scenic area for us. Our street walks are simply beautiful in the fall and we enjoy not having to super far to experience it! Whether it be in your own neighborhood, or head to a park, this activity is good for you mentally and physically and is always a good choice for a beautiful morning.
6. Have An IPhone Photo Shoot
With the editing software out there and the newer IPhones a person can achieve photos that look professional! Set up some pumpkins in your yard and dress up your Little One in a cute outfit. If you want to know how to take a professional photo on your IPhone, simply take your photos while on the “portrait setting”, and then use your camera’s editing features to brighten and enhance your photos after. You may be surprised at the outcome, and it’s fun and free!
7. Hand And Footprint Painting
One of our favorite gift ideas is to make handprint and footprint art! You can get creative or keep it simple and whether it’s going on your fridge or going to Grandma or Grandpa, they are a sweet way to see how your child’s little hands and feet grow each year! Click here for some ideas!
8. Autumn Sensory Bin Play
Grab a small tote bin or pan from the kitchen, and fill it with dried corn, rice, lentils or whatever you can find in your pantry. (The dollar store is also a good place to check for inexpensive sensory play items.) Add a few of their favorite toys – in my son’s case they are his tractors and construction vehicles – and you will have an easy sensory bin activity that will entertain for a while! 9. Roll and Cut Sugar Cookies
Make your favorite fall treat! I found a simple sugar cookie recipe online, and my toddler loves to help roll out the dough and cut out the cookies into pumpkin shapes! I also make my own dough by eye balling water and flour in a bowl and mixing it up for him to roll and cut and play with as well to continue the “baking” activity. Don’t forget the fun frosting and sprinkles!
10. Make A Leaf Collage Craft
For an easy glue and stick toddler craft, have them collect leaves and make a “collage” on paper! This year my toddler learned the difference of an oak leaf and maple leaf and we organized them and glued them accordingly. Finding educational toddler activities can be easy and fun too.
